Van Driver & Transportation Coordinator - Job Descriptions
POSITION: VAN DRIVER
POSITION SUMMARY: Responsible for the safe transport of participants to the facility, medical appointments, shopping, and outings. Maintains the van in a clean condition.
REPORTS TO: Transportation/Program Manager
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Adheres to and conveys a philosophy that supports the dignity, privacy, independence, choice, and individuality of participants.
Transports participants according to an established schedule, staying with allotted times.
Assists participants in and out of the bus.
Interacts with participants in a warm, professional manner, maintaining positive relationships with participants.
Notifies the Director of Transportation/Administrator of any potential mechanical problems or needed repairs.
Maintains an open line of communication with the Activity Director regarding needed transportation.
Maintains a clean driving record.
Reports any suspected participant abuse to the appropriate agency(s).
Assists participants with activities of daily living such as daily meal service, ambulation, transfers and supervision/monitoring of participants during field trips.
Responsible for ensuring emergency equipment required by the state (i.e., triangles, fire extinguisher, and first-aid kit) are available and in good working order.
Flexibility and adjustment for all participant needs and program requirements.
Respond in an appropriate time frame to instructions and requests made by a delegating supervisory staff member.
Perform all other tasks as requested.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Enjoys working with the elderly and disabled people.
Relates to participants in a courteous, understanding and cooperative manner.
Professional appearance and demeanor.
Good verbal communication skills.
Good judgment.
Maintains a current driver’s license of the appropriate type required for the van.
Maintains a good driving record.
GENERAL STAFFING REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Must be at least 20 years of age. High school education or equivalent GED required.
Prefer at least one year’s experience driving professionally.
POSITION: TRANSPORTATION COORDINATOR
POSITION SUMMARY: The Transportation Coordinator is responsible for scheduling and coordinating transportation; scheduling and supervising vehicle maintenance; supervising drivers; running center errands; transporting participants to medical appointments/therapy, and serving as a substitute driver.
REPORTS TO: Transportation/Program Director
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Scheduling transportation for all new program admissions.
Scheduling and coordinating a daily transportation schedule;
Providing a daily transportation schedule to the Administrator for review;
Coordinating with the receptionist, the notification of family caregivers of changes in transportation scheduling as necessary;
Notifying drivers of transportation schedule changes and providing them with instructions regarding routing at least the day preceding the change;
Scheduling all vehicle preventative maintenance and ensuring that vehicle maintenance is performed promptly and to safety standards;
Scheduling all emergency vehicle maintenance needed.
Insuring that vehicles are “down” for maintenance are returned promptly to use by the center
Insuring that all vehicles are clean and contain emergency equipment; spill kit performance;
Supervise all drivers and provide on-the-road spot checks to assess driving performance;
Advise the program director of changes that are needed in transportation procedures;
Inform drivers of any changes in transportation policies or procedures;
Run center errands, which may include shopping, the post office, etc.
Transport participants to medical appointments as requested by the Nurse;
Serve as a substitute driver during driver absenteeism or during periods when a driver position is vacant;
Report program director immediately any problems with vehicle maintenance or driver performance;
Assist in the interview of prospective drivers and make recommendations to the administrator regarding the same;
Together with the program director, complete driver performance evaluations;
Coordinate and assist in the emergency evacuation of participants if inclement weather (e.g. a hurricane) is threatened or if there is a power failure or other reason that the Center must close during program hours;
Coordinate driver emergencies en route with emergency assistance.
Complete Quality Improvement audits and report findings to the Quality Improvement Committee. Ensure corrective action and follow-up as necessary.
Monitor transportation logs for completion and regulatory compliance.
Assist in facility operations as requested, such as meal service, supervision of participants during trips, and other duties as requested.
